About

  • Starship Theseus is a freeform scenario for 10 people written in 2024 by Adam Hayes, Christi S, Michael Jones, and Nyx Hollindrake
  • It deals with mature themes and is not generally suitable for people under the age of 16
  • It is a narrative style freeform (in the UK freeforms style) with
    • a focus on inhabiting the characters and exploring the relationships between them
    • pre-written characters and plot
    • minimal mechanics
    • no combat
  • The freeform is similar tonally to, but is not directly based on, a number of dystopian science fiction influences, including
    • Blake’s 7
    • Firefly
    • the works of Philip K. Dick.
  • It was originally written at the Peaky Games freeform writing weekend.

Is it for me?

You may like Starship Theseus if

  • You are interested in exploring questions about what makes you the person you are
  • You are prepared for your character to be distressed by what may happen to them in the freeform
  • You are more interested in telling a story than in necessarily having a happy ending (the ending is not pre-determined, but it is possible that things will go badly)
  • You are happy to respond flexibly to a situation that may change substantially in nature
  • You are prepared to read (or otherwise have provided to you) new information while the freeform is running

Starship Theseus may not be for you if

  • You want to be the uncomplicated hero of a thrilling space adventure
  • You want an outcome where good unambiguously triumphs over evil
  • You want to find an objectively correct and best solution to the problems that you are presented with
  • You do not want anything upsetting to happen to your character
  • You do not enjoy situations where you may need to change your goals or assumptions rapidly
